Networking for Life Ministry

FPC Bethlehem members employment survey
Career Development Series

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Gal 6:10 NIV)

The current economic situation has made it a difficult environment for people seeking meaningful work. Many people are either unemployed or underemployed. A conservative estimate is that at least 10% of the work-eligible people in the nation find themselves in this situation, and in many areas the rate is much higher. That means, statistically, a large number of people within this church are potentially unemployed, underemployed or facing loss of a job in the near future.

Today, the best method by far to find employment is through personal contact with people you know who in turn touch base with the people they know, and so on. Many key positions are not advertised; they are worked behind the scenes by companies and their recruiters to find the right person with the right fit. Somewhere out there are the ideal jobs for everyone. God knows where they are, but beyond prayer and spiritual guidance, how do we seek to uncover them?

Personal networking is a key. It is essential to not only finding jobs, but also to building relationships, making new friends, helping others and staying in touch throughout one’s life.

A small, dedicated volunteer team at FPC, with the blessing and support of the Senior Staff, has launched the Networking for Life Ministry. All FPC Bethlehem members are asked to complete a simple survey which tells a bit about themselves, such as the industry they work in, connections they might have, ways they might help, etc. We also want to find volunteers who can help people write resumes, conduct mock interviews, guide people on search approaches and any other ways they can offer support. This is strictly voluntary, but I strongly urge you to participate because, without your help, the ministry will struggle to achieve its goal of connecting people with people.

The intention of this ministry is to make this a way of life within our church, not just while the job market is down. This can lead to other opportunities such as knowing people who offer services you might need, like remodeling or babysitting.

Your much-needed help is requested to more deeply connect with people within our church and surrounding communities. So please help support a core value of First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem: Deep Investment with One Another! Please see the Networking for Life Assumptions and Assertions.
